So you know how when the batteries in your smoke detector get low, it starts to chirp? Well, that chirping sound is apparently my dogs kryptonite. Today the smoke detector in the basement starting chirping very sporadically. It did it a few times this morning, but had stopped by the time I went to work. But apparently it started back up again while we were gone today.
And this sound makes the dogs go crazy. Bat poop crazy. Yoda attempted to chew his way out of his kennel (and almost succeeded). Yes, Rachael, he has now shredded Savannah's old kennel too.
And Scout burrowed in our closet, laundry room, corner of our bedroom-the evidence of her panic is all over the upstairs.
The most frustrating thing is that I replaced that particular smoke detector's battery over the summer one night IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT while Jason was out of town because it starting chirping and the dogs freaked out at 3:30 AM. So now we think we have to replace the whole thing. And since they are wired into the house's electricity, this will not be a small project.
I am torn between feeling so bad for the absolute panic this caused for the dogs-not real sure how Scout managed to survive this without having a heart attack-and being frustrated at the ridiculousness of it all.
This is reason #3,469 that my motto is "two kids, two dogs, too much."
If you have a dog, don't get another one. The first one is not lonely and doesn't need company. Also, if you're trying to decide if you're ready to have a baby by getting a dog, just go ahead and have the baby-at least in about 3 years you'll be able to reason with them.
And if you are amongst the smartest of all humans and have no pets, for heaven's sake, keep it that way. DON'T GET A DOG!!
